The secrets of success in single-parent households. Even before Warrick Liang traveled to an orphanage in Vietnam to bring home his infant son, he knew that being a single dad was no small feat: He would need all the help he could get. So not only did he find a Vietnamese woman to care for his son while he worked, Liang also called a long list of friends in the San Francisco East Bay community where he lived, asking each to make a once-a-week commitment as evening helper. By the time Liang brought 5-month-old Eric Binh home, in December , he had someone lined up for every night of the work week. Monday through Friday, a friend was there to help make dinner and wash the dishes while Liang fed Binh, gave him his bath, and sang his son a lullaby. If Liang seems an unlikely poster boy for single parents, that's because the national image needs an ate. The U.

Me and my daughter are best friends, so much so that she does the whole 'I won't be your best friend anymore' kid thing when she doesn't get her own way  she is only 6, 7 next month, but I wouldn't change anything that has happened if it meant things would be different now.

It's five years on Tuesday since I became a single mum in very distressing circumstances. The first six months I was a total zombie due to insomnia but with three kids under 10 I just had to get up each day and get on with it. Now, reflecting back, I can see that the last five years, though tough, have been some of the most rewarding of my life. I've had to push myself when I've been scared or worried to do stuff so my kids would have a better life. I moved house to a better area, I've sorted out my bills, saved up for my 40th last year and we all went to Morocco with the family adventure holiday company and had the best time ever.
Met lots of friends and felt so very brave! Job wise I had to go back to working more hours quicker than I'd wanted - my daughter was 5 when I went back to work at a Senior school 27hrs a week as an LSA. But you know what? I love my job.
I find it again so rewarding. I go in each day and love working with the kids and get such a boost out of it. When I read a report of an interview that one of my keyworker kids had written I almost cried when I saw he'd said I was such a great person, that I always listened to him and made him feel smarter and better about himself.
The whole thing about single parents ruining their kids is rubbish. My three academically and socially are doing fantastically well. It is tiring being the only one but you can do all the days out, trips, discussions, trips to the library etc that get you out and about as a family.

Single parent dating has never been so simple.
We've done so much. Like I said I had to push myself but it's made me realise so much is possible. When I look at my life now, compared to before, it's like two separate people. In those months of bleak despair right back at the beginning I felt there was never going to be happiness again.
But I have it by the bucket load! It seemes to depend heavily on the circumstances but I have found that most positive stories come from sheer determination to be positive.
My children see their dad half the time and we work together to make their lives are seem-free as possible so I perhaps have it 'easier' than others but being on your own is challenge with children. On a person level, I have found that I have thrived as a single parent. It's been four years now and I have a home I love, I have been back to uni to get my Masters, passed my driving test, made loads of fantastic friends, started a job I absolutely love school librarianI'm just about to start my Chartership and I am just a happy person.
The impact of this on my children is significant. They do incredibly well at school and I get loads of compliments on their confident natures. We also have a lot of fun and because I have a wider social circle, we always have people around and they love it. I also find that because they aren't surrounded by a negative relationship if anything, I get on so much better with the ex nowthey are good at complimenting people, which is something I am pleased about.
Their dad used to put me down a lot and now they don't see that. Anyway, I have had an incredible 4 years and don't ever regret a thing. I think that the positivity that comes from our separation has been good for all of us, including my ex who has also thrived.

Deleted profile. Single mum to a 17 and 10 year old. My husband walked out week after I found out I was pregnant. Had no contact until ds was 3. Now he comes for tea and spends the evening until ds goes to bed every week without fail.
Ds is 6 next month. I was a store manager for a supermarket before ds. Took a lower role so could work part time. Was made redundant twice! Took an admin role. Quit that a year later to do a degree in primary education with aim of becoming a teacher and just finished my second year and secured a permanent teaching assistant role while I finish degree. Its hard going it alone I admit and life isnt easy but then I dont think any parent has it easy. My one piece of advise would be never badmouth dad or his family to the kids and always leave the door open to contact even if it doesnt happen straight away.
Ive always been of the opinion that a child needs both parents where possible barring abuse or safety issues. Our family isnt conventional but it works. You just need to find what works for you. Good luck xx My husband walked out week after I found out I was pregnant. Good luck xx. Hi Jade I have been a single Mum for 5 years, since before my son was born! My son has complex needs, which brings its challenges but I have managed to work, although tough at times and overcome any challenges we have come across so far!!
I would say the most positive thing about being a single parent for me is the incredibly strong bond my son and I have If you have self belief, a good life balance, good friends and the odd glass of wine, then the rest takes care of itself!! My ex and his daughter 15 and bloody hard work are hopefully moving out in a few weeks and I cannot wait. No more cleaning other big people crap off the toilet!!
